Thymus 'Woolly' (Woolly Thyme) Care:

Height and Spread:

  • Height: Typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 inches.
  • Spread: Forms a low, spreading mat with a spread of 12 to 18 inches or more.

Description:

  • Foliage: 'Woolly' Thyme is characterized by its small, aromatic, gray-green leaves covered with a fuzzy texture, giving it a woolly appearance. The foliage is evergreen.
  • Flowers: In late spring to early summer, small pink to lavender flowers may appear, adding a touch of colour to the groundcover.
  • Habit: Low-growing, dense, and ground-hugging, forming a carpet-like mat.

General Care:

1. Sunlight:

  • Requires full sun to thrive. Plant in a location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

2. Soil:

  • Well-draining soil is essential. Woolly Thyme prefers sandy or gravelly soil with good drainage. It can tolerate poor soil conditions.

3. Watering:

  • Drought-tolerant once established. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

4. Mulching:

  • A layer of mulch can help conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid mulching too close to the crown of the plant to prevent moisture-related issues.

5. Pruning:

  • Pruning is not strictly necessary but can be done to maintain a neater appearance. Trim back the plants lightly after flowering to encourage compact growth.

6. Fertilization:

  • Woolly Thyme is not heavy feeder. A light application of a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring is usually sufficient.

7. Winter Care:

  • Generally hardy and can withstand cold temperatures. In extremely harsh temperatures, a layer of mulch can provide additional winter protection.

8. Pest and Disease Management:

  • Thyme is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, good air circulation and proper spacing can help prevent issues. Keep an eye out for signs of root rot in overly wet conditions.

9. Uses:

  • Groundcover: 'Woolly' Thyme is often used as a groundcover in rock gardens, between stepping stones, or as edging in herb gardens.
  • Aromatic: The leaves release a pleasant fragrance when crushed and are often used in culinary applications.

10. Propagation:

  • Propagate through division or by taking cuttings. Spring is a suitable time for these activities.

'Woolly' Thyme is valued for its low-maintenance nature, attractive appearance, and aromatic qualities.
